Byron Buxton Shines in Home Run Derby Despite Semifinal Exit

Jul 15 2025

Byron Buxton, the Minnesota Twins' All-Star, made a notable impact during the Home Run Derby held on Monday night, showcasing his impressive hitting skills. With a total of 20 home runs in the first round, he advanced to the semifinals, where he faced off against Junior Caminero of the Tampa Bay Rays.

In a closely contested semifinal, Buxton fell just short, losing 8-7. His longest home run of the night soared an impressive 466 feet, demonstrating his power at the plate.

Caminero, however, could not clinch the title, as he was ultimately defeated by Cal Raleigh of the Seattle Mariners, who is affectionately known as Big Dumper.

This derby marked Buxton's inaugural appearance in the event, taking place in his home state of Georgia. It followed a remarkable performance just days earlier when he hit for the cycle in a decisive 12-4 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates.

At 31 years old, Buxton is enjoying a standout season in his second All-Star campaign. As of now, he boasts a .289 batting average and an on-base plus slugging percentage of .925 through 78 games. With 21 home runs this season, he has already achieved the second-highest total of his career. His offensive wins above replacement stands at 3.9, placing him sixth in Major League Baseball.

Pitcher Joe Ryan represents the Twins as their only other All-Star this season.

As the All-Star break approaches, the Twins find themselves with a record of 47-49, trailing the Detroit Tigers by 11.5 games in the AL Central division.
