Cleveland Guardians' David Fry Hospitalized After Pitch to Face
Cleveland Guardians player David Fry faced a harrowing incident on September 23, when a fastball from Detroit Tigers pitcher Tarik Skubal struck him in the face during the sixth inning of their matchup.
The 29-year-old Fry attempted to bunt a 99 mph pitch, but the ball missed his bat entirely, resulting in a direct hit to his face. He collapsed immediately, clutching his face as medical personnel rushed to his aid.
Despite the severity of the impact, Fry remained conscious and was able to stand with assistance before being transported to a cart. Initially taken to Lutheran Medical Center, he was later moved to Cleveland Clinic Main Campus for further evaluation and overnight observation.
Guardians manager Stephen Vogt provided updates post-game, stating, “He’s getting tested. He stayed conscious the whole time. Definitely some injuries there, so I’ll give you an update tomorrow.” He confirmed that the ball struck Fry directly rather than glancing off the bat.
Fry entered the game with a batting average of .171, having hit eight home runs and driven in 23 runs over 66 games this season after earning an All-Star nod in 2024. His current status remains uncertain following the incident.
Skubal, visibly shaken by the event, expressed concern for Fry’s well-being. “It’s really tough,” he said after the game. “I’ve already reached out to him… just want to make sure he’s all right. I hope it stays that way. The health of him is more important than a baseball game.”
The pitch was ruled a foul ball, allowing Fry to retain his at-bat. Guardians outfielder George Valera replaced him as a pinch-hitter but struck out.

As play resumed, Skubal struggled under pressure, issuing a wild pitch, committing a throwing error, and being called for a balk—all within the same inning.
The Guardians capitalized on Detroit’s mistakes, scoring three runs in that inning, including an RBI groundout from third baseman José Ramírez. This surge shifted momentum in favor of Cleveland, who ultimately secured a 5-2 victory.
This game held significant implications for the AL Central standings, with both teams ending the night with identical records. The outcome kept the race for the divisional title wide open as the regular season nears its conclusion.
The Guardians and Tigers are set to continue their three-game series on September 24 at Progressive Field in Cleveland.
