Cole Young's Debut RBI Secures Mariners' 5-4 Win Over Twins

Jun 01 2025

Cole Young made an immediate impact in his major league debut, driving in the winning run with a fielder's choice in the 11th inning, leading the Seattle Mariners to a 5-4 victory against the Minnesota Twins on Saturday night.

Young, who was called up from Triple-A Tacoma just before the game, executed a well-placed dribbler down the first-base line off pitcher Cole Sands (3-2), allowing Miles Mastrobuoni to score. The throw from first baseman Ty France arrived too late to prevent the run.

Earlier in the game, Seattle catcher Cal Raleigh launched his 22nd home run of the season in the third inning, tying him with Shohei Ohtani of the Los Angeles Dodgers for the major league lead.

In a familiar pattern, the Mariners found themselves relinquishing a lead in the ninth inning for the second consecutive game. Trevor Larnach's single allowed Byron Buxton to score after he reached base due to a fielding error by reliever Carlos Vargas.

J.P. Crawford had previously given Seattle its first lead of the night with a two-run homer in the seventh inning, showcasing the team's resilience.

The Twins initially surged ahead with a three-run lead in the second inning, highlighted by Matt Wallner's two-run homer in his return from the injured list, followed by Buxton's two-out RBI single.

Despite this early setback, the Mariners' bullpen delivered a strong performance, limiting Minnesota's scoring opportunities. Collin Snider (2-1) pitched scoreless innings in both the 10th and 11th frames.

In a pivotal moment during the 10th inning, Wallner attempted to score from second base on Kody Clemens' single up the middle. However, Julio Rodriguez showcased his impressive arm strength, delivering a perfect throw to home plate to cut down Wallner. Shortly thereafter, Harrison Bader grounded into an inning-ending double play.

Looking ahead, Seattle right-hander Luis Castillo (4-3, 3.32) is scheduled to start against Minnesota's Chris Paddack (2-5, 3.92) in the series finale on Sunday.
