Deion Sanders Returns to Coaching After Bladder Cancer Surgery
Deion Sanders, head coach of the University of Colorado football team, made a triumphant return to the sidelines on August 29, just four months post-bladder cancer surgery. The 58-year-old coach energized his team at Folsom Field in Boulder as they prepared for their season opener against Georgia Tech.
In a display of enthusiasm, Sanders sprinted onto the field, clad in a black jacket and pants, complemented by white knee socks and a cowboy hat. Social media captured the moment, showcasing his excitement as he rallied his players.
Notably, a portable toilet was stationed next to the Colorado bench, a practical adaptation during his recovery. ESPN reporter Adam Rittenberg highlighted this detail, noting that the toilet bore the Depends brand name, indicating a sponsorship arrangement.
Sanders addressed health concerns during a press conference on July 28, revealing that he underwent bladder removal surgery in May after a cancerous tumor was detected. He confirmed he is now cancer-free.
"This wasn’t easy," Sanders stated. "Men, everybody, get checked out. If it wasn’t for me getting tested for something else, they wouldn’t have stumbled upon this." His candid remarks underscored the importance of regular health screenings.
Reflecting on his journey, Sanders mentioned losing approximately 25 pounds and described the recovery process as "a tremendous journey." He candidly shared the challenges he faced, including adjustments to his bathroom habits. "I can’t pee like I used to pee," he admitted.

Fans of Colorado football may notice Sanders utilizing portable toilets throughout the season due to his new lifestyle. "I depend on Depends," he quipped, blending humor with his serious message about health awareness.
Encouraging others to prioritize their health, Sanders emphasized that many individuals face similar challenges. "Let’s stop being ashamed of it and let’s deal with it head-on," he urged. "Get checked out. Because it could have been a whole ‘nother gathering if I didn’t."
This season marks a significant change for Sanders as it is his first without his sons, Shedeur and Shilo, on the roster. The trio joined Colorado in 2022 after their tenure at Jackson State University.
Shedeur, now 23, was drafted by the Cleveland Browns in the fifth round of the 2025 NFL Draft and currently serves as the team's third-string quarterback. Meanwhile, Shilo, 25, signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as an undrafted free agent but was released earlier this month following an incident during a preseason game.
