DeMarcus Cousins Faces Suspension Following Altercation with Fans
DeMarcus Cousins, a former NBA All-Star center, has been suspended for the remainder of the season in Puerto Rico's basketball league following a confrontation with fans during a game earlier this week.
During the incident on Monday night, the 34-year-old Cousins made an obscene gesture, engaged in a verbal exchange, and grabbed the arm of a courtside fan before being escorted away by teammates.
His actions led to a second technical foul, resulting in his ejection from the game. As he made his way to the locker room, he continued to argue with another fan while spectators hurled liquids in his direction.
The Baloncesto Superior Nacional league announced that Cousins has been fined $4,250 and may face an additional fine of $5,750.
In a statement, the Mets organization expressed their strong disapproval: "As an organization, we strongly condemn any form of violence or provocation, whether on or off the field. Safety, respect, and sportsmanship are non-negotiable values for this franchise."
This marks Cousins' second season in Puerto Rico, where he averaged 18.2 points and nine rebounds per game for a team currently holding a 9-18 record. Last season, he played a pivotal role in leading the Mets to the semifinals.
Over his 11-season NBA career, Cousins averaged 19.6 points and 10.2 rebounds. His standout season came in 2016-17 with Sacramento, where he posted an impressive average of 27.8 points.
Beyond his time in Puerto Rico, Cousins has also played in basketball leagues in Taiwan and Mongolia.
