Denver Film's Women + Film Festival Highlights Female Voices in Cinema

May 29 2025

Denver Film is set to launch its Women + Film Festival, featuring a robust selection of ten feature films alongside a curated shorts program, receptions, a marketplace, and engaging panel discussions.

The festival opens with a luncheon honoring actress and director Julia Stiles, who will receive the Barbara Bridges Inspiration Award. Attendees can expect an awards ceremony, a conversation with Stiles, and a screening of her directorial debut, "Wish You Were Here."

Ambriehl Turrentine, Programming Manager for the festival, shared insights about the event: "We're going to have a pre-party for the film 'SALLY.' It's about Sally Ride, the astronaut, so it'll be space-themed, super fun." Additionally, two community conversations will take place during the festival. One will explore the evolution of sexuality on screen, while the other will address moral panics and their impact on marginalized communities.

The panel discussion titled "The Making of a Moral Panic" is scheduled for Sunday following the closing night screening of "The Librarians," which depicts Texas librarians fighting against book bans and advocating for First Amendment rights. The panel will feature Janique E. Robillard, producer of the film; journalist Owen Swallow; and James LaRue, Executive Director of the Garfield County Public Library District.

"We really just look for films that are bold, telling fresh stories from new perspectives and thought-provoking," Turrentine explained. "Of course, we make sure they reflect both emerging talent and established talent."

This year’s festival will also include a marketplace in the Sie FilmCenter lobby showcasing local, women-owned businesses. A new addition is the Sip and Craft event on the outdoor patio, where attendees can enjoy cocktails while engaging in crafts.

"I think the films are powerful, the guests and filmmakers coming are super inspiring, and the audiences are so passionate," Turrentine noted. "Seeing all that come together in one spot is really worth it."

Denver Film's Women + Film Festival is scheduled to run from May 30 to June 1, 2025, at the Sie FilmCenter in Denver.
