University of Michigan Secures Dusty May with Multiyear Contract Extension

Feb 22 2025

The University of Michigan has made a significant move by announcing a multiyear contract extension for basketball coach Dusty May, just hours before a tough 75-62 loss to 14th-ranked Michigan State. May, who at 48 years old, became the first coach in Michigan's history to win his initial 13 home games, faced a setback in the 14th game against the Spartans, relinquishing first place in the Big Ten.

Despite the defeat, May expressed his contentment with the 12th-ranked Wolverines and dismissed any speculation about moving to Indiana to fill the coaching vacancy left by Mike Woodson, who is set to step down after the season. Athletic director Warde Manuel commended May's dedication to the university and the basketball program, stating that his performance has surpassed expectations and instilled excitement for the future.

In his inaugural season, May has already led Michigan to 20 victories, marking the first time in four years that the team has achieved this milestone. University of Michigan President Santa Ono expressed his delight at securing May for the long term, acknowledging the exceptional leadership of Warde Manuel in finalizing the extension.

May took on the role almost a year ago, succeeding Juwan Howard, and inherited a team that had suffered a record 24 losses. Following a challenging season where the Wolverines finished at the bottom of the Big Ten with a 3-17 conference record, May's impact has been transformative.

Prior to joining Michigan, May enjoyed a successful tenure at FAU, boasting a 126-69 record over six seasons. His crowning achievement was guiding the American Athletic Conference program to a remarkable 35-4 record and a spot in the 2023 Final Four. Despite facing the departure of seven transfers and welcoming four freshmen, May has exceeded expectations at Michigan.
