Phillies Power Up: Schwarber, Kepler, and Castellanos Shine in Rockies Showdown

Mar 31 2025

In a thrilling home opener, the Philadelphia Phillies rallied to a 6-1 victory against the Colorado Rockies, thanks to a clutch two-RBI double from Edmundo Sosa and a towering homer from Kyle Schwarber. The game, held on Monday, saw the Phillies, who are the 2024 NL East champions, bring the energy with a little help from their friends across the street.

Adding to the excitement, Philadelphia Eagles stars Brandon Graham and Saquon Barkley made a surprise appearance, throwing out the ceremonial first pitches to a roaring crowd. With two outs and two runners on base in the seventh inning, Graham was shown on the big screen, rallying the fans to amp up the noise.

Sosa stepped up to the plate and delivered, hitting his second double of the game to right-center off Rockies reliever Victor Vodnik. This hit brought in Bryson Stott and Trea Turner, giving the Phillies a 2-1 lead. Following Sosa's clutch hit, Schwarber launched his third homer of the season, a massive 434-foot shot that extended the lead to 4-1.

The excitement didn’t stop there, as Max Kepler and Nick Castellanos followed suit with back-to-back homers in the eighth inning, further solidifying the Phillies' dominance in the game.

On the mound, Cristopher Sánchez had a solid outing, striking out seven batters over 5 1/3 innings. He did allow a solo homer to Hunter Goodman in the sixth but was quickly replaced by Orion Kerkering, who secured the final two outs. Joe Ross (1-0) came in for the seventh inning, maintaining the score and earning the win.

Turner, who had missed the previous two games due to back spasms, made a crucial pinch-hit appearance in the seventh. With a runner on base and two outs against reliever Scott Alexander (0-1), Turner fell behind 0-2 but managed to work a walk, reaching base as the tying run.

For the Rockies, Germán Márquez made only his sixth start in three years due to injuries. He pitched six scoreless innings, striking out four and walking none, although he did allow a hit to Alec Bohm, who showcased his powerful bat.

The series continues on Wednesday, with the Phillies set to send RHP Zack Wheeler (0-0, 1.50 ERA) to the mound against Colorado's Kyle Freeland (0-0, 0.00 ERA). Fans are eagerly anticipating what promises to be another exciting matchup.
