Johnny Somali Faces Legal Trouble for Deepfake AI Korean Girlfriend Brag

Johnny Somali, already entangled in legal issues, faces potential jail time for his use of deepfake AI technology to create a video where he appeared to be kissing a Korean IRL streamer known as bongbong. Initially sued by bongbong for this act, she has opted to withdraw her legal action, but the South Korean authorities are considering pressing charges against him.

Although the original stream showcasing the video has been removed, fragments and screenshots from the incident still exist. The deepfake AI's telltale sign was a logo visible in the corner of Johnny's laptop as he proudly flaunted the video to his audience, claiming to have a Korean girlfriend.

In a now-deleted stream, bongbong was seen filing a complaint against Johnny Somali at the Cheongwon Police Department regarding the video content. Despite her decision to retract the charges, the South Korean government retains the right to pursue legal action against him.

It is essential to acknowledge that Johnny and bongbong had previously collaborated on streams, which could have influenced her choice to drop the charges. However, reuploaded footage from their joint stream captures bongbong making derogatory remarks towards Johnny Somali, referring to him as a "monkey" and uttering other offensive comments.

Regardless of bongbong's stance, the charges against Johnny Somali persist, with the potential involvement of the South Korean government. Recent legislation, as reported by Reuters, passed on September 26, 2024, dictates severe penalties for individuals in possession of sexually explicit deepfakes of others, including up to seven years of imprisonment and a substantial fine of approximately $22,000 USD.

These legal troubles are in addition to Johnny Somali's existing array of charges, such as defacing a monument dedicated to victims of sexual slavery during World War II and alleged drug-related offenses. Despite issuing an apology for his actions, his contrition has not swayed authorities, leading to travel restrictions preventing him from leaving the country.
