Irish Police Investigate Alleged Robbery of Steelers QB Skylar Thompson
Police in Ireland are currently investigating an incident involving Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Skylar Thompson, who was reportedly attacked and robbed during the team's visit to Dublin. The alleged event took place while the Steelers were preparing for their game against the Minnesota Vikings on September 28.
Thompson, 28, is said to have suffered minor injuries as a result of the altercation. On September 29, An Garda Síochána, the Irish national police, issued a statement regarding the situation.
On the morning of September 27, authorities encountered a male requiring medical assistance. “The male in his 20s was treated and assessed at the scene by emergency services personnel,” the statement noted. However, it also emphasized that “no formal complaint has been made by any person at this time.”
Despite the reports, police indicated they had “no further information to substantiate, or not, any report this incident involved a robbery.”
Sources indicate that the alleged incident occurred near the Temple Bar area of Dublin and involved several men. Following the encounter, Thompson was briefly hospitalized at St. James’s Hospital before being discharged.
The Steelers organization acknowledged the situation involving Thompson, who is currently on injured reserve. “We are aware of a situation involving Skylar Thompson on Friday night in Dublin,” said Steelers spokesperson Burt Lauten. “We will have no further comment at this time as we are working with NFL security to gather more information regarding the incident.”
Reports from NFL Network's Tom Pelissero confirmed that Thompson had been “jumped and robbed,” but reassured fans that he was “OK” and had returned to join his teammates.

The NFL Players’ Association also expressed their support for Thompson, stating, “The NFLPA is actively gathering more information and working to understand the full circumstances surrounding what took place. Our priority is the health and safety of our player members.”
After the Steelers' 24-21 victory over the Vikings, linebacker T.J. Watt commented on the incident, saying, “I don’t have enough to comment on that.”
Thompson was drafted by the Miami Dolphins in the seventh round of the 2022 NFL Draft and played in seven games during his rookie season, starting two. He signed a reserve/future contract with the Steelers in January but was placed on injured reserve earlier this month due to a hamstring injury sustained in practice.
The Steelers will have a bye week in Week 5 before facing off against the Cleveland Browns on October 12. Thompson's addition to the Steelers' 53-man roster last month came as a surprise following his impressive performance during training camp and preseason.
Reflecting on his journey, Thompson stated, “I was very confident in the work I put in this preseason. What I put on tape gave me confidence whether it was going to be here [in Pittsburgh] or somewhere else.” He emphasized the importance of seizing opportunities and maintaining a positive mindset.
