Joey Chestnut Claims 17th Title at Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest
On July 4, 2025, the Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest crowned its champion in Coney Island, New York. Joey Chestnut, a seasoned competitor, devoured 70.5 hot dogs and buns in just 10 minutes, earning him his 17th mustard belt. At 41 years old, Chestnut came tantalizingly close to surpassing his own record of 76 hot dogs, set in 2021. After the event, he expressed regret for not achieving a higher count but assured fans of his return next year.
Trailing significantly was Patrick Bertoletti, who managed to consume 46.5 franks, while James Webb secured third place with 45.5 hot dogs. In the women’s division, Miki Sudo triumphed with a total of 33 hot dogs, marking her 11th victory. Despite her success, Sudo voiced disappointment over her performance, having previously set a record of 51 hot dogs last year. “For some reason, the buns felt larger today,” she remarked to reporters.
This year’s contest marked a notable comeback for Chestnut, who was absent in 2024 due to a ban following an endorsement deal with Impossible Foods, a rival brand in the hot dog market. Major League Eating (MLE) expressed their dismay over Chestnut's decision to partner with a competitor, stating they had made significant efforts to accommodate him. “We are devastated to learn that Joey Chestnut has chosen to represent a rival brand,” MLE stated in June 2024.

In response to the ban, Chestnut took to Instagram, alleging that MLE was attempting to alter the rules regarding affiliations with other food brands. “This is apparently the basis on which I’m being banned,” he stated, emphasizing that it wouldn’t affect the July 4th contest. He lamented that the decision would rob fans of their traditional holiday entertainment.
During his absence, Bertoletti claimed victory in the 2024 contest with a total of 58 hot dogs consumed. However, by September of that year, Chestnut hinted at a potential return, stating he would “absolutely” consider competing again. “They have to be reasonable,” he noted, reflecting on his training methods that included both dunking and non-dunking techniques.
As the contest approached this year, Chestnut shared insights into his preparation routine. “I usually watch some old practices, almost kind of simulated contests just swallowing air,” he explained. His regimen includes early bedtimes and morning stretches to prepare his stomach for the challenge ahead.

Chestnut also incorporates aloe vera juice into his routine for throat lubrication and avoids solid foods leading up to the event. “The day before I usually have to eat a hot dog at the weigh-in,” he detailed, adding that he typically consumes eggs and protein shakes prior to the contest.
Post-competition, Chestnut prioritizes rest and recovery. “Usually I’m in bed,” he described his holiday routine, occasionally taking walks if he feels up to it. He maintains a light diet afterward, focusing on salads and yogurt to keep his system moving.
