Josh Jung's Late Heroics Propel Rangers Past Yankees, 8-5
In a decisive moment, Josh Jung launched a three-run homer in the 10th inning, propelling the Texas Rangers to an 8-5 victory against the New York Yankees on Monday night. This win marked the Rangers' seventh consecutive triumph at home.
Jung's impressive 401-foot blast to left-center came off Jake Bird (4-2) after Wyatt Langford was intentionally walked with two outs. This marked Jung's 11th home run of the season.
Earlier, Joc Pederson, struggling with a .132 batting average, tied the game with a pinch-hit homer in the ninth inning. His 408-foot shot off Devin Williams was significant, as it was his first home run since May 17, following a two-month absence due to a right hand fracture.
Danny Coulombe (2-0), making his third appearance since being acquired from Minnesota at the trade deadline, secured the win by pitching the 10th inning for Texas.
For the Yankees, Paul Goldschmidt opened the game with a leadoff home run and scored three times, but the team suffered its fourth consecutive loss. All-Star pitcher Max Fried exited after five innings with a 5-4 lead, falling short of achieving a major league-best 13th win.
The Yankees had taken a 5-4 advantage thanks to Giancarlo Stanton's two-run homer in the fourth inning. Fried struggled through 105 pitches, allowing eight hits and four runs while striking out seven. His performance included an errant pickoff throw that contributed to a run.
Goldschmidt's leadoff homer was New York's ninth of the season, trailing only the Los Angeles Dodgers, who have 11. Stanton has hit 10 homers in just 32 games since returning from elbow issues that sidelined him for the first 70 games of the season.
Coulombe showcased his defensive skills by fielding a comebacker from Austin Wells to initiate an inning-ending double play after issuing a walk in the 10th.
Following a challenging 2-5 road trip, Texas has now won 12 of its last 15 games at home. Looking ahead, Nathan Eovaldi (9-3, 1.49 ERA), who enjoyed an undefeated July with a 0.59 ERA, is set to start for Texas on Tuesday night. The Yankees will counter with Will Warren (6-5, 4.64).
