Kelly Stafford Responds to Matthew Stafford Clone Theory

Aug 22 2025

Kelly Stafford, married to Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford since 2015, is navigating a peculiar rumor that has surfaced online.

On August 20, Barstool Sports published an article titled “The Best NFL Conspiracy Theory On The Internet – Matthew Stafford Died A Couple Weeks Ago, Got Cloned, New One Is Now QB1 for the Rams.” Kelly, 36, took the bizarre claim in stride, sharing her thoughts on Instagram the following day.

“I knew there was something different about him… that @ammortal_official is wild,” she posted, alongside a screenshot of the article.

She tagged Ammortal, the company providing the recovery chamber that Matthew, 37, utilizes to “reset, recharge, and rejuvenate the body, mind and spirit,” as described on their website.

The appearance of an Ammortal chamber at Rams camp, coupled with vague updates regarding Matthew’s absence from practice due to a back injury in early August, fueled speculation online. This led to the hashtag #StaffordDiedWeeksAgo trending across social media platforms.

Matthew has since returned to practice, which only intensified the clone theory as he gears up for his 17th NFL season.

One fan humorously remarked, “The LA Rams shared a deepfake video showing deceased quarterback Matthew Stafford practicing with the team,” above a clip of Matthew at practice. “Disrespectful to his memory and to his family.”

Another user chimed in with skepticism: “They expect me to believe this is the same person?? WAKE UP PEOPLE #StaffordDiedWeeksAgo,” posting side-by-side images of Matthew from different stages of his career, highlighting perceived differences in his teeth with red circles and arrows.

This fan continued the jest in the comments, labeling anyone suggesting a dental procedure as “sheep.”

As of now, Matthew has not participated in either of the Rams’ first two preseason games, with Stetson Bennett taking over as starting quarterback.

The Rams are set to kick off their regular season on Sunday, September 7, at home against the Houston Texans. While it remains uncertain if Matthew will play, coach Sean McVay provided an optimistic update on August 18.

“It was good to be able to have Matthew out there. He did a good job today. I thought he looked good. I don’t really have any updates,” he stated during a media briefing. “We’re going to keep it a day and really a week at a time, but it was great to be able to see him out there today. We’ll see how this afternoon goes and tomorrow.”
