Kezar Stadium Welcomes Golden City FC: A Boost for Local Businesses

Jun 26 2025

San Francisco's Kezar Stadium is set to become the home of Golden City FC, a new franchise in the MLS Next Pro league, with games commencing in 2026 or 2027. The announcement has sparked excitement among local businesses, particularly at Kezar Pub, located just across the street.

"We're big football fans here," stated owner Cyril Hackett, who has managed the pub for nearly three decades. "This bar is synonymous with soccer, or football as we call it." The establishment has a rich history, having served patrons since the days when the 49ers played at Kezar from 1946 to 1971.

As the pub approaches its 90th anniversary, Hackett expressed optimism about the new franchise. "We needed a shot in the arm because I think we get a little forgotten out here," he remarked, reflecting on the challenges faced during the pandemic. Many local businesses are still recovering from the impact of shutdowns.

"We've weathered the storm here," Hackett continued. "People are starting to come back into the bars and watch sports, but habits have changed. We can't cry forever. We have to get up and go at it." With a professional team nearby, he anticipates a surge in business, estimating at least 20 home games per year that could lead to increased staffing and revenue.

Mayor Daniel Lurie announced that Golden City FC will invest $10 million into upgrades at Kezar Stadium, including a new field and seating arrangements. "Kezar is so ingrained in our city's history and the lives of everyday residents that Golden City FC's investment is truly an investment into the people of San Francisco," Lurie noted.

However, not all soccer enthusiasts are thrilled about the new team. Scott Brown, a devoted supporter of San Francisco City FC, an amateur team currently playing at Kezar, expressed concern over potential displacement. "It's a shame to have somebody overlook a grassroots, fan-owned organization like SF FC," he said. "We're really proud of ourselves. Really proud of the name and proud of the team."

Kezar Stadium also hosts the San Francisco Nighthawks women's soccer team in the Women's Premier Soccer League. General manager Jill Lounsbury welcomed the new franchise, emphasizing collaboration within the soccer community. "The soccer community looks forward to partnerships that allow everyone to grow from the top down and from the bottom up," she stated. "I personally look forward to a light being shined on our very diverse and vibrant community with Golden City Football Club's assist!"

For Hackett, the prospect of new neighbors is exciting. "You can have too much beer and too much tequila, but you could never have too much soccer," he concluded, highlighting his enthusiasm for the upcoming changes at Kezar Stadium.
