Marlins Edge Padres 4-3 in Tense Finish
Rookie Agustín Ramírez showcased his talent with two hits and two runs scored, leading the Miami Marlins to a narrow 4-3 victory against the San Diego Padres on Tuesday night.
Kyle Stowers contributed significantly, doubling and driving in a run, while Heriberto Hernández added two singles and an RBI to the Marlins' efforts.
On the mound, Edward Cabrera (4-4) delivered a solid performance, allowing just five hits and striking out six over 5 2/3 innings, giving up only one run. This marked Cabrera's return after a stint on the sidelines due to elbow discomfort, making his first appearance since July 11.
The Marlins struck early, with Stowers' RBI double highlighting a two-run first inning against Padres starter Stephen Kolek (3-5). Otto López opened the scoring by capitalizing on a throwing error from San Diego's third baseman Manny Machado.
San Diego responded in the third inning when Luis Arraez connected for a run-scoring single. However, Miami extended their lead in the sixth with Hernández's RBI single, followed by Javier Sanoja's run-scoring triple in the eighth, pushing the score to 4-1.
Cade Gibson took over for Cabrera and secured four outs before Anthony Bender pitched a flawless eighth inning. Closer Ronny Henriquez faced challenges in the ninth, beginning with Gavin Sheets drawing a leadoff walk. Xander Bogaerts then doubled, setting the stage for Jackson Merrill's two-run double that narrowed the gap to 4-3.
Despite the pressure, Henriquez managed to retire Jake Cronenworth on a pop out and struck out José Iglesias, ultimately securing his sixth save when pinch hitter Trenton Brooks popped out.
Kolek's performance included three runs and eight hits over 5 2/3 innings, as he struggled to contain Miami's offense.
Cabrera's outing concluded dramatically when he sprinted off the mound to field Bogaerts' dribbler, successfully throwing out Arraez at home plate as he attempted to score from third.
Xavier Edwards continued his impressive form with a single in the sixth, marking his success in hitting safely in 16 of 18 games throughout July.
Looking ahead, Padres RHP Dylan Cease (3-9, 4.64) is set to face Marlins RHP Sandy Alcantara (4-9, 7.14) in the series finale on Wednesday.
