Jun 19 2025

Lionel Messi showcased his brilliance with a stunning free kick, propelling Inter Miami to a 2-1 victory over Porto in the Club World Cup on Thursday.

Trailing 1-0 at halftime, Inter Miami found their equalizer just two minutes into the second half. Telasco Segovia connected with a well-placed cross from Marcelo Weigandt, leveling the score and igniting the crowd.

Then came the moment that fans had been waiting for. The 37-year-old Messi, already a legend in the sport, added another highlight to his illustrious career. After being fouled by Rodrigo Mora just outside the penalty area, Messi stepped up to take the free kick. The atmosphere at Mercedes-Benz Stadium was electric, with chants of "Messi! Messi! Messi!" echoing as he prepared to strike.

In the opening minutes of the match, Samu Omorodion had put Porto ahead with a penalty kick awarded after a video review, marking the Portuguese club's first goal of the tournament.

Both teams had previously played to scoreless draws in their Group A openers, making this match crucial for their advancement.

Messi's left-footed shot soared over the wall and found the top right corner of the net in the 54th minute, sealing the comeback for Inter Miami.

With this victory, Inter Miami will return to South Florida on Monday, where a win against Brazilian club Palmeiras at Hard Rock Stadium will secure their place in the Round of 16.

Meanwhile, Porto faces a must-win situation as they conclude group play against Egypt's Al Ahly at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
