Michigan Football Coach Sherrone Moore Detained Amid Assault Allegations

Police detained Sherrone Moore, the former head coach of the University of Michigan football team, on December 10, following allegations of assault. The 39-year-old was held at Washtenaw County Jail as authorities investigated the incident.

Earlier that day, the university announced Moore's termination. Athletic director Warde Manuel issued a press release stating, “U-M head football coach Sherrone Moore has been terminated, with cause, effective immediately.” He cited credible evidence from a university investigation that indicated Moore had engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a staff member, a violation of university policy.

Details regarding the nature of this alleged relationship were not disclosed. In the wake of Moore's firing, associate head coach Biff Poggi was appointed as interim head coach. Poggi, who previously led the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, had already stepped in as interim head coach for two games earlier this season during Moore's suspension related to a sign-stealing investigation.

Shortly after the coaching changes were announced, reports surfaced about an incident involving Moore that led to his detainment. The Pittsfield Police Department confirmed they responded to an alleged assault around 4:10 p.m., taking a suspect into custody. They noted that the incident did not appear random and there was no ongoing threat to the community.

The police statement indicated that the suspect was being held at Washtenaw County Jail while the Washtenaw County Prosecutor reviewed potential charges. The investigation remains active, and further details are withheld to preserve its integrity.

Moore had completed his second season as head coach, leading the Wolverines to a 9-3 record. The team is set to face the University of Texas in the Citrus Bowl on New Year’s Eve.

Married for ten years to Kelli, Moore is a father to three daughters: Shiloh, Solei, and Sadie. Manuel had previously praised Moore’s leadership skills, stating he was a dynamic and competitive individual who inspired his players. “The players love playing for him and being with him in the building every day,” Manuel remarked when announcing Moore's hiring last year.
