New Music Venue Bookclub Opens in Former Elbo Room Space

In the heart of Lakeview, a fresh musical experience has emerged. Bookclub, a venue that champions Black, queer, and woman ownership, is redefining the concert scene in Chicago.

"We’ve created a unique space; it’s not your typical stage setup," co-owner Nick Heineman explained. "Instead of a flat stage, we designed a Lady Gaga catwalk, which reflects our identity as a queer-owned venue."

Situated at the bustling intersection of Lincoln, Lakewood, and George, Bookclub occupies the building that once hosted the Elbo Room, a beloved establishment that closed its doors in 2019 after three decades of live music.

Heineman noted, "You can feel the energy from 30 years of performances here. It’s an unusual sensation." The new owners aim to honor that legacy while infusing their own vision.

"The spirit remains intact," co-owner Maren Rosenberg remarked. "We haven’t altered the structure; just made some aesthetic updates." This sentiment was echoed by co-owner Cam Stacey, who added, "The presence of all the live music that came before us is palpable."

Bookclub's journey began in 2021 when Stacey and co-owner Kevante "K.O." Weakley launched an informal performance space near Irving Park Road and Broadway. "We hit a plateau regarding the types of artists we could support and the shows we could host," Weakley reflected.

Upon discovering the old Elbo Room was available, they seized the opportunity and began renovations last year. By January, Bookclub was ready to welcome audiences.

The ownership team has expanded to include diverse voices from the Black and queer communities. "Our backgrounds allow us to bring unique perspectives and ensure inclusivity," Rosenberg stated.

Weakley emphasized their commitment: "It’s our responsibility to make sure everyone feels seen and welcomed." Stacey added, "Creating a safe environment is crucial; we want patrons to feel free to express themselves."

At Bookclub, losing oneself in music is paramount. "We’re united by our love for music and performance," Rosenberg said. Heineman concluded, "Generations may change, but music endures."

The venue features an innovative layout with a basement stage and a main floor bar equipped with a large screen displaying performances, allowing guests to relax while remaining part of the action.
