Ohio University Football Coach Brian Smith Dismissed Following Admission of Affair
Ohio University has terminated the contract of football coach Brian Smith after he acknowledged having an affair with an undergraduate student. The decision was made public following a letter from university President Lori Stewart Gonzalez, which outlined the circumstances surrounding Smith's dismissal.
Records show that Smith's contract officially ended on December 17. The letter accused him of conducting the affair at the Ohio University Inn, raising questions about professional conduct within the university's athletic program. Notably, the student involved was not affiliated with the athletic department, and Smith reportedly ended the relationship in November.
Smith's attorney, Rex Elliott, defended his client, asserting that the relationship was consensual and that there is no university policy against such interactions. "This is a case of OU pursuing Coach Smith without fully understanding the facts," Elliott stated, emphasizing that there is no justification for a termination "for cause." He indicated that Smith is prepared to take legal action if necessary.

The circumstances leading to Smith's firing have raised eyebrows, particularly given that he was placed on administrative leave just days earlier, on December 1. This abrupt action came as a surprise to many, including Smith himself, who was not informed of any specific allegations at that time.
In a statement shared via social media platform X, Elliott expressed that Smith was "shocked and dismayed" by the university's actions. He described Smith as an ethical individual who has contributed significantly to the university and its football program. "He wants nothing but the best for the players, coaches, and the entire Bobcat community," Elliott added.
Reports indicate that Smith was separated from his wife when the affair began, and Elliott noted that Smith was unaware of the student's status as an undergraduate at their initial meeting. This detail adds complexity to the narrative surrounding the relationship.
Following Smith's leave announcement, John Hauser was appointed as Interim Head Coach. Hauser has been with the Bobcats since 2022 and previously served as associate head coach and defensive coordinator. His leadership has been credited with contributing to the team's success in the Mid-American Conference Championship in 2024.
As Ohio University prepares for its upcoming bowl selection, which will be announced on December 7, the focus remains on how this situation will impact both the football program and Smith's future. The Bobcats concluded their regular season with a victory against Buffalo on November 28, finishing with an 8-4 record.
Despite the turmoil surrounding his dismissal, Smith has maintained his innocence regarding any wrongdoing. He has expressed his intention to contest any allegations made against him vigorously. The unfolding events continue to attract attention as they raise questions about personal conduct and professional boundaries within collegiate athletics.

Smith's divorce was finalized shortly after his termination, on December 9, further complicating the personal aspects of this situation. Documents reviewed suggest that his personal life may not have directly influenced the university's decision to place him on leave.
