Philadelphia Phillies Secure First-Round Draft Pick Gage Wood

Jul 22 2025

Gage Wood, the Philadelphia Phillies' first-round draft selection, has officially joined the team after signing a $3 million contract on Tuesday. The right-handed pitcher from the University of Arkansas is set to report to the Phillies' training complex in Clearwater, Florida, this week.

Selected as the 26th overall pick, Wood has already experienced a glimpse of his future in Philadelphia. "It's awesome. I got to come up here to Philly for the first time; I worked my whole life for this," the 21-year-old expressed. "It's a blessing and I can't wait to get going."

During his brief stay in the city, Wood witnessed an electrifying atmosphere at Citizens Bank Park. He was present when Kyle Schwarber hit a grand slam that secured a victory over the Angels on Saturday night. Additionally, he celebrated with family as the Phillies triumphed over the Red Sox on Monday night due to a catcher's interference call.

"The stadium's awesome, the fans are awesome, and the environment is incredible," Wood remarked. "It was really surreal."

When not at the ballpark, Wood has been keeping active. "I've been working out at the hotel, and we've been playing catch in the strip of grass right across the road," he noted, reflecting on his preparations.

Despite his impressive college career, including a remarkable 19-strikeout no-hitter in the College World Series, Wood remains grounded about his transition to professional baseball. "College and the professional level are two different stages, so I don't want to get ahead of anything," he stated when asked if his college achievements set him apart from other first-round draftees.

As he looks ahead to Florida, Wood is focused on what lies ahead. "I'm going to work as hard as I can to perform the best that I can," he said. "But I'll let the people in the front office make that decision."
