Pirates Edge Giants in 10 Innings, Complete Sweep
In a tightly contested matchup, Henry Davis' fielder's-choice grounder in the 10th inning propelled the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 2-1 victory over the San Francisco Giants on Wednesday, completing a three-game sweep.
Pittsburgh's winning streak now stands at five games, while the Giants have hit a rough patch, finishing their homestand with an 0-6 record. This marks the first time since 1896 that the Giants franchise has failed to secure a win during a homestand of six or more games, as noted by the Elias Sports Bureau. With this loss, San Francisco falls below .500 for the first time this season, now sitting at 54-55.
Last weekend, the Giants were swept by the New York Mets, adding to their current woes.
In the decisive 10th inning, with runners on the corners, Davis hit a comebacker to pitcher Ryan Walker (2-4). Instead of attempting to throw home to get Oneil Cruz, Walker opted for a play at second base in an effort to secure a double play. Jack Suwinski, who was running on the pitch, managed to beat the throw, while Davis was retired.
Isaac Mattson (3-1) showcased his skills by pitching two scoreless innings, striking out both Patrick Bailey and Heliot Ramos with runners in scoring position to seal the game.
Pirates starter Mike Burrows delivered an impressive performance, allowing just one run on three hits over six innings, striking out seven batters and issuing one walk. On the other side, Giants' Logan Webb also had a strong outing, giving up one run on five hits in 5 2/3 innings while striking out 11 and walking four.

Highlighting the game was a remarkable catch by Giants right fielder Mike Yastrzemski in the eighth inning. He tumbled over a low wall into foul territory to snag a fly ball hit by Jack Suwinski.
Pittsburgh's pitching staff demonstrated dominance by retiring 25 consecutive hitters from the last out of Tuesday's fourth inning through the first three innings of Wednesday's game. The streak was finally broken by Ramos' single.
Looking ahead, Pittsburgh's Andrew Heaney (5-9, 4.79 ERA) is set to face Colorado's Antonio Senzatela (4-4, 6.68) on Friday. Meanwhile, San Francisco will take on the New York Mets and pitcher David Peterson (7-4, 2.83) on the same day.
