Brewers Rally Late to Edge Marlins 3-2, Avoiding Sweep

Jul 27 2025

In a thrilling finish, Blake Perkins delivered a crucial single in the ninth inning, propelling the Milwaukee Brewers to a 3-2 victory against the Miami Marlins on Sunday.

Trailing 2-1, the Brewers mounted a comeback, scoring in both the eighth and ninth innings to dodge a sweep. This marks only the second time this season that Milwaukee has avoided being swept, with their only previous instance occurring during their opening series at Yankee Stadium.

With one out in the ninth, Eric Haase connected for a bloop single to center off Cade Gibson (2-5) and advanced to third on Brice Turang's broken-bat double down the left-field line. In a strategic move, Gibson intentionally walked Jackson Chourio to load the bases.

Perkins then stepped up and sent a 3-2 pitch soaring over center fielder Dane Myers, securing the winning run.

Earlier in the game, Perkins had already made an impact by scoring the tying run in the eighth inning after coming in as a pinch-runner. He stole second base and crossed home plate on Andrew Vaughn's two-out ground-rule double off Ronny Henriquez.

On the mound, Milwaukee's Trevor Megill (3-2) faced a challenge in the ninth when Javier Sanoja hit a two-out double. However, right fielder Isaac Colins made a spectacular running catch to extinguish the Marlins' threat.

Heriberto Hernández of Miami continued his hot streak, homering for the second consecutive game.

Despite leading 2-1 in the seventh inning with runners on first and second and only one out, Miami's hopes were dashed when they ran themselves out of an inning. Aaron Ashby executed a pickoff of Myers at second base, then caught Xavier Edwards off first base, leading to a double play after a replay review overturned an initial safe call.

Chourio's performance included two doubles, extending his hitting streak to 20 games. This impressive run places him among Brewers legends; only Paul Molitor's franchise-record 39-game streak in 1987 surpasses it. Other notable hitting streaks of at least 20 games include those by Davey May, Ryan Braun, Cecil Cooper, and Corey Hart.

Looking ahead, Miami will travel to St. Louis for a three-game series, with Edward Cabrera (4-4, 3.48 ERA) set to pitch against St. Louis' Andre Pallante (5-7, 4.91 ERA) in Monday's opener.

The Brewers will also begin a three-game series against the Chicago Cubs on Monday, featuring an All-Star pitching matchup between Milwaukee's Jacob Misiorowski (4-1, 2.45) and Chicago's Matthew Boyd (11-3, 2.20).
