Preston Carey of East Northport Sets Sights on Georgia and NFL Dreams

Jul 11 2025

“Since the helmet weighed me down as a 4-year-old,” Preston Carey recalls, his passion for football ignited early. The towering defensive lineman, standing at 6-foot-5 and nearly 300 pounds, has recently made headlines by committing to the University of Georgia during a celebration at Oheka Castle, surrounded by hundreds of enthusiastic supporters.

Carey, who received a full scholarship offer from Georgia in eighth grade, reflects on his journey: “I had offers from five other schools at that time. I would attend college football camps and dominate against older talent.” His commitment to Georgia was a natural progression, as he sought the next significant step in his athletic career.

“Georgia believed in me since Day 1,” he stated, emphasizing the importance of the program in his development. After narrowing down over 50 offers to UGA, Florida, Auburn, and Rutgers, he chose the Bulldogs for their unwavering support.

His love for football stems from “the aggression and dominating your opponent,” a mindset that has driven him to tackle challenges head-on. Starting on varsity as a freshman at St. Anthony’s High School, Carey played a pivotal role in leading the Friars to a state championship victory in 2022.

Carey credits St. Anthony’s for instilling discipline and motivation, noting that students are held to higher academic standards. “A passing grade there is a 75, not 65 — so you have to be locked in for every class,” he explained. “It definitely builds callus.”

After two successful years, he transferred to IMG Academy in Florida, a school known for producing NFL talent. “It was easy for me. I would pack a bag up and go anywhere if it was beneficial for my career,” he said, reflecting on his time at IMG and his connection to St. Anthony’s.

Carey thrived with the IMG national team and gained a substantial social media following, showcasing his aggressive playing style. With one more fall season at IMG before redshirting at Georgia in December, he is focused on honing his skills.

Throughout his recruitment, Carey maintained close communication with Georgia's defensive line coach Tray Scott, who has provided valuable insights. “He keeps it real 100 percent through and through,” Carey noted, appreciating the guidance on what it takes to reach the next level.

This summer, Carey is up at 6 a.m. training at Peak Training System in Deer Park under Golden Ukonu, a former undrafted free agent with the Tennessee Titans. After rigorous gym sessions, he transitions to MMA and boxing training. “As a defensive lineman, you’re basically boxing. You’re using your hands to fight,” he explained.

While focused on improving as a player, Carey is also excited about potential NIL opportunities that could help support his family. The prospect of appearing in the upcoming video game “NCAA Football 27” brings him joy. “It’s gonna be crazy,” he said. “It’s all a blessing.”

Ultimately, Carey aims to leverage his time in the SEC as a stepping stone toward achieving his goal of being drafted into the NFL. “It’s a goal, not a dream,” he asserted, “because I’m working toward it every day.”
