Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce: A New Era for the Kansas City Chiefs
Taylor Swift's presence at Arrowhead Stadium marked a pivotal moment for the Kansas City Chiefs, intertwining her star power with the NFL franchise.
The premiere of ESPN's docuseries, The Kingdom, on August 14, 2023, delves into the early stages of Swift's romance with Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce. The series reveals how their relationship has reverberated throughout the organization.
Swift, 35, made headlines when she attended a game against the Chicago Bears on September 24, 2023. This appearance not only confirmed the seriousness of her relationship with Kelce, 35, but also raised significant logistical challenges for the team.
In a revealing moment from episode three of The Kingdom, which airs on August 19, Chiefs marketing officer Lara Krug recounted receiving a call from team president Mark Donovan. “I remember him saying Taylor Swift was coming to the game,” Krug recalled. “I looked out the window and thought, ‘Huh, that’s a big deal.’”
Donovan, 59, shared his own surprise at the news. “Lara walked into my office and closed the door,” he said. “She asked me if this was normal. I laughed and said, ‘No, Laura, this is not normal.’”

Just two days later, Swift was spotted in a suite with Kelce’s mother, Donna Kelce, creating a buzz that transformed the atmosphere at Arrowhead.
Despite the excitement surrounding Swift's attendance, Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes was initially skeptical. “Travis told me during the week,” Mahomes said. “I had to see it to believe it.”
However, once inside the stadium, Mahomes quickly became a believer. “You could see people gravitating toward her,” he noted.
The cameras captured Mahomes and Kelce exchanging glances toward Swift’s suite, both players visibly taken by the moment. “That’s the first person I noticed,” Mahomes remarked to Kelce. “I didn’t see anybody else.”
As Swift settled into Arrowhead, whispers filled the Chiefs locker room. Defensive tackle Chris Jones recalled players marveling at her presence: “You know Taylor Swift is here? For real? With Travis? Oh my God!”

After the Chiefs triumphed over the Bears, ESPN’s Nate Taylor found himself rethinking his game day coverage. “Whatever I was going to write that day had to include Taylor Swift,” he said. “We went down to the locker room and it was this awkward dance of congratulating them and then asking about Taylor.”
He added, “You couldn’t write enough about her. You couldn’t talk enough about her.”
Even ESPN’s Mina Kimes admitted her initial doubts about the authenticity of Swift and Kelce’s relationship. “I did not think it was real,” Kimes confessed. “But she kept showing up, and I realized no one goes to Kansas City that much for a fake relationship.”
The first two episodes of The Kingdom are currently available on ESPN+, with subsequent episodes set to premiere on August 19 and August 20.
