Tragic Car Accident Claims Life of Soccer Star Diogo Jota

Jul 09 2025

On July 3, a fatal car accident in Zamora, Spain, claimed the lives of Liverpool soccer player Diogo Jota and his brother, André Silva. Jota was driving his Lamborghini when the vehicle crashed, according to preliminary findings from Spain’s Guardia Civil.

Investigators suspect that excessive speed contributed to the incident, as evidenced by tire marks left on the highway. The crash resulted in a tire blowout, causing the Lamborghini to ignite. Jota was 28 years old, while his brother was 26.

The Guardia Civil is expected to complete its investigation by the end of the week, with findings set to be submitted to a local judge before public release.

Funeral services for the brothers took place in their hometown of Gondomar, Portugal, on July 5. This tragedy struck just days after Jota celebrated his marriage to longtime partner Rute Cardoso on June 22.

Cardoso shared wedding photos on social media shortly before the accident, expressing her joy with the caption, “My dream came true.” Jota responded with a heartfelt comment, “But I’m the lucky one.” The couple had been engaged since 2022 and shared three young children: sons Dinis, 4, and Duarte, 2, along with a daughter born in November 2024.

In response to Jota's untimely death, Liverpool FC released a statement expressing their devastation. “Liverpool Football Club are devastated by the tragic passing of Diogo Jota,” the club announced. “The club have been informed the 28-year-old has passed away following a road traffic accident in Spain along with his brother, Andre.”

The statement further requested privacy for the families and friends affected by this unimaginable loss, emphasizing the club's commitment to supporting them during this difficult time.

The impact of Jota's death resonated throughout the sports community. LeBron James, a minority stakeholder in Liverpool FC, shared his condolences on social media. “My prayers goes out to his loved ones during this time! May you all be guided and protected! YNWA JOTA!!” he posted.

“YNWA” stands for “You’ll Never Walk Alone,” a song that has become synonymous with Liverpool supporters. Cristiano Ronaldo, who played alongside Jota on the Portuguese national team, also expressed his sorrow. “It does not make sense,” Ronaldo wrote. “We were only just together in the national team; you had only just got married. I send my condolences and all the strength in the world to your family, to your wife and to your children. I know that you will always be with them. Rest in peace, Diogo and André. We will all miss you.”

This tragic event has left a profound void in the lives of many, highlighting the fragility of life and the deep connections formed through sport.
