Team Europe celebrated their Ryder Cup victory with a pointed message directed at President Donald Trump, who was in attendance at the event. Following their win against Team USA on September 29, European players, including Rory McIlroy and Jon Rahm, sang a cheeky tune aimed at the former president.
“Are you watching? Are you watching? Are you watching, Donald Trump?” the team chanted, lifting the Ryder Cup trophy high in the air. This moment of revelry came after a hard-fought match that concluded with a score of 15-13 in favor of Europe.
Trump, who had been present at Bethpage Black Golf Course in Farmingdale, New York, earlier in the week, took to his Truth Social platform to respond. “Yes, I’m watching. Congratulations!” he posted, acknowledging the playful banter from the European squad.
Earlier in the day, Team Europe captain Luke Donald shared that Trump had reached out to McIlroy after their victory. “We were having a moment together with the team, and Rory got a text from the president,” Donald recounted. “We read it out and thought we’d have a little bit of banter with him.” The captain noted that Trump seemed to take the light-hearted exchange in stride.
Trump's affinity for golf is well-known, and he often communicates with players from both teams. Scottie Scheffler, a member of Team USA, remarked on Trump’s enthusiasm for the sport. “He just loves the game of golf,” Scheffler said. “When you’re around him, he does such a good job of feeding confidence into everybody around him.”
Despite the celebratory atmosphere, the Ryder Cup weekend was not without its challenges for Team Europe. Players faced heckling from fans, with McIlroy’s wife even being targeted when a beer was thrown in her direction. Reflecting on the experience, McIlroy described it as “a rough week for all of us.”

“I don’t think we should ever accept that in golf,” he stated firmly. “Golf should be held to a higher standard than what was seen out there this week. It has the ability to unite people and teaches good life lessons.”
McIlroy acknowledged that while they faced adversity from the crowd, their performance ultimately silenced critics. “We tried to handle everything that came our way with class and poise,” he said. “For the most part, I felt like we did that.”
The Ryder Cup victory not only showcased Team Europe’s skill but also highlighted the camaraderie and competitive spirit that defines this prestigious event.
