In a startling moment at UFC 323, Alexandre Pantoja's title defense was abruptly halted after just 26 seconds. The Brazilian fighter faced Joshua Van in Las Vegas on December 6, but a severe injury rendered him unable to continue.
Pantoja attempted a kick early in the match, but landed awkwardly, resulting in a grotesque twist of his elbow. The injury led to an immediate disqualification, granting Van a TKO victory and the championship by default.
Following the incident, Pantoja took to Instagram to express his disappointment and share his determination for a comeback. “Accidents happen,” he stated in a video. “I felt in the best shape of my life. I believed I could finish him in the first round.” His confidence was palpable as he reflected on his journey to the octagon.

“That’s my octagon, that’s my belt,” he emphasized, underscoring the significance of the moment. Pantoja acknowledged Van's victory, stating, “That’s his destiny to win this belt tonight. I just can’t win this belt with my injury today.” He vowed to work hard and reclaim his title in the future.
As he prepares for recovery, Pantoja plans to return to Brazil and resume training. “I’m going to follow my dream again,” he affirmed, expressing gratitude for the support he has received. “I respect everyone, especially my family. I’m going to work very hard and bring the belt back home.”
Details surrounding the injury are still emerging. UFC CEO Dana White clarified that Pantoja suffered a dislocated shoulder rather than an elbow injury, despite initial perceptions from video footage. “They popped his shoulder back in,” White explained. “Now they’ve got to do MRIs and check out the ligaments.”
While no specific timeline for Pantoja’s return has been established, White noted that recovery will require time. Meanwhile, Van expressed eagerness for a rematch once Pantoja is healed. “I didn’t want the fight to end that way,” he remarked, showing respect for his opponent. “As soon as [Pantoja] is recovered, I want to run it back.”
Van acknowledged Pantoja's status as one of the greatest fighters and indicated that he is open to whatever direction the UFC decides next, but reiterated his desire for a rematch.
