49ers Strengthen Wide Receiver Lineup with Equanimeous St. Brown
The San Francisco 49ers have added depth to their wide receiver lineup by signing Equanimeous St. Brown, brother of Detroit Lions star Amon-Ra St. Brown, just as training camp kicks off.
On Tuesday, the team confirmed the signing of St. Brown to a one-year deal, though specific contract details remain undisclosed. The 28-year-old veteran previously joined the New Orleans Saints on a one-year, $1.25 million contract but spent a significant portion of the 2024 season on the practice squad.
Originally drafted by the Green Bay Packers in the sixth round of the 2018 NFL Draft from Notre Dame, St. Brown has accumulated experience over four seasons with the Packers and two seasons with the Chicago Bears.
As the 49ers prepare for training camp practices starting Wednesday, they face challenges due to injuries and departures among their wide receivers. Notably, free agent Deebo Samuel has signed with the Washington Commanders, while key players Brandon Aiyuk and Ricky Pearsall are both on the physically unable to perform list.
Additionally, Jauan Jennings, a fifth-year wide receiver, is reportedly seeking a new contract or a trade. However, general manager John Lynch clarified that Jennings is present at camp and has not formally requested a trade. "You guys know our feelings on J.J. He embodies what we think a Niner's all about," Lynch stated. "We're not going to get into the contract talks and all that. That takes care of itself, but you know, we love him and he's here."
While Aiyuk is not expected to be ready for the regular season opener, both Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan indicated that Pearsall's absence should be brief following a hamstring injury sustained during offseason workouts in May. "He is fine. We just haven't seen him the last two weeks," Shanahan noted. "We're not going to throw a wide-out out there the first three days. We don't want to pull it again until we see his conditioning and everything, which we should get in three days, and then he should be good."
Moreover, Demarcus Robinson, who signed a two-year, $95 million contract in March, may face a three-game suspension after pleading no contest to a misdemeanor DUI charge from November while playing for the Los Angeles Rams.
