Actress Files Lawsuit for Compensation After Being Excluded from 'Gun & Powder'

Aug 23 2025

Ciara Renée, a seasoned actress known for her roles in both Broadway and television, has initiated legal action following her removal from the cast of the musical "Gun & Powder." The lawsuit centers on her claim for compensation she believes she rightfully earned.

Renée, recognized for portraying "Hawkgirl" in popular series like "Arrow" and "The Flash," has an impressive resume that includes performances in "Waitress," "Frozen," and notable productions such as "Pippin" and "Big Fish." Her recent involvement in the show at Paper Mill Playhouse in Millburn, NJ, had led her to anticipate a role in the upcoming musical "Wanted."

During its two-month run in 2024, "Gun & Powder" garnered acclaim, with Renée receiving positive reviews for her portrayal of Mary Clarke, one of two outlaw twin sisters in 1893 Texas. The production was highlighted as a "critic's pick" by a prominent publication.

According to court documents, Renée recorded songs for the show at the request of the producers and was introduced as part of the future Broadway cast during an investor event in Martha’s Vineyard in August 2024. She was also invited to participate in various promotional activities, including a stage reading and an awards show.

However, shortly after these engagements, producers Alecia Parker and Samuel Lopez allegedly informed her that they had advised the production company, Sisters Clarke LLC, against hiring her due to claims of her not collaborating effectively with the creative team during the New Jersey run. Renée disputes these allegations, asserting that they are unfounded.

In her lawsuit, she claims that her exclusion from the production has cost her a potential income of $486,000 for a nine-month Broadway engagement set to begin in 2026. A representative for the producers has firmly denied Renée's allegations, stating their intention to defend against what they describe as false claims.

The unfolding legal battle highlights the complexities and challenges within the theater industry, where contractual agreements and personal dynamics often intersect in contentious ways.
