Braves Dominate Marlins 7-1 as Historic Umpire Takes the Field
Michael Harris II launched a three-run homer, and rookie Hurston Waldrep delivered a stellar six-inning performance as the Atlanta Braves triumphed over the Miami Marlins 7-1 on Saturday. This game marked not only a significant win for the Braves but also a historic moment in Major League Baseball.
Jen Pawol made her mark as the first female umpire to officiate in a Major League game, taking her position at first base. She is set to continue her groundbreaking role at third base for the second game of the doubleheader and will be behind home plate for the series finale on Sunday.
Waldrep (2-0), in just his second start of the season, showcased his skills by allowing four hits, one walk, and one run while striking out six batters. Over his two starts, he has surrendered only two runs across 11 2/3 innings.
Harris finished the game with two hits in four at-bats, contributing three RBIs and scoring twice. His seventh-inning home run marked his 11th of the season. Drake Baldwin also shone with a 2-for-4 performance, driving in two runs. Ozzie Albies and Eli White added to the Braves' early lead with RBIs in the second inning, putting Atlanta ahead 2-0.
On the other side, rookie Ryan Gusto (7-5) faced challenges in his Marlins debut, yielding three runs over six innings. Acquired from the Astros on July 31, Gusto's performance was highlighted by Xavier Edwards, who managed to score Miami's only run with a single in the sixth inning.

Defensively, Braves left fielder Jurickson Profar made a spectacular leaping catch in the fourth inning, robbing Agustín Ramírez of a home run as he reached over the wall in front of the Marlins' bullpen. Waldrep's reaction was one of disbelief as he placed both hands on his head upon witnessing the catch.
The Marlins fielded an inexperienced lineup, featuring six rookies in their batting order alongside Gusto on the mound.
As the teams prepared for the second game of the split doubleheader, Marlins right-hander Sandy Alcantara (6-10, 6.44) was set to face Braves newcomer Erick Fedde (3-12, 5.32), who will be making his third start for Atlanta since joining from the Cardinals.
