Edmundo Sosa Reports Improvement After Collision in Phillies' Win

Jul 26 2025

Edmundo Sosa exited Saturday's game against the New York Yankees after a collision with teammate Brandon Marsh. The incident occurred in the seventh inning when Sosa attempted to catch a popup from Jazz Chisholm Jr. in short left field.

As Sosa, Marsh, and shortstop Trea Turner converged on the ball, Turner backed off, allowing Sosa to make the catch. However, Marsh collided with Sosa, causing him to fall and lose possession of the ball.

Following the collision, Phillies head athletic trainer Paul Buchheit and manager Rob Thomson attended to Sosa, who walked off the field slowly with Marsh supporting him.

Initially, umpires ruled Chisholm's hit a single, but after a video review, they reversed the decision, crediting Sosa with the catch before hitting the ground.

Otto Kemp took Sosa's place in the lineup for the eighth inning as the Phillies secured a 9-4 victory.

Post-game, Sosa expressed optimism about his condition. "I feel good," he stated through a translator. "I'm just feeling a little tight right now. It was just a back contusion but I feel good and I'm ready for tomorrow."

Reflecting on the play, Sosa explained, "If you look at the play, Trea goes after a ball, I go after the ball, look up, don't see it. Then I see Trea looking at the ball, like trying to look at the ball, and he doesn't see it either. And that's maybe when Marsh with his instincts, very good instincts, he goes right after the ball."

Sosa was diagnosed with a bruise but did not require further testing. Manager Rob Thomson noted, "I went in to check on him after the game and he was a lot better than I expected. So he may be able to be in the lineup tomorrow."
