Cambridge Theater Hosts Unique Musical Experience
"Two Strangers (Carry a Cake Across New York)" has made its U.S. debut at the American Repertory Theater in Cambridge, captivating audiences with its unique narrative and innovative staging. This musical, which has already seen success across the United Kingdom, delves into the profound impact one person can have on another's life.
Olivier Award-winning actor Sam Tutty, who plays the role of Dougal, describes his character as "this absolute whirlwind of optimism and unshakable happiness." Dougal arrives in New York for his estranged father's wedding, setting the stage for an unexpected journey.
Christiani Pitts, who stars alongside Tutty as Robin, a cynical New Yorker and sister of the bride, notes the dynamic between the characters. "Him being dropped into my world seems like it could be a catastrophe, but it's also the most amazing thing. It's so unexpected," she shares.
The plot unfolds over 36 hours as Dougal and Robin traverse the city to retrieve a wedding cake. Their adventure is punctuated by pop songs that touch on themes from Christmas to modern dating, revealing layers of their personalities along the way.
Pitts emphasizes a central theme of the musical: "Layers and baggage and constantly unraveling and opening yourself up and closing yourself back up when you're uncomfortable." This idea is visually represented through a rotating set designed from various pieces of luggage, which transform throughout the performance.
"It's so malleable," Tutty explains about the set. "There are so many little crevices and cupboards and drawers, and it's just so exciting." As the scenery shifts, so too does the relationship between Dougal and Robin.
"They evolve because of the interaction, not because someone told them to," Pitts adds. "These two people have no desire to change one another. They just want each other to be the best versions of themselves. And I think that's why you root for them."
Audiences can catch "Two Strangers (Carry a Cake Across New York)" at the Loeb Drama Center in Cambridge until July 13th.
