Chiefs Coach Critiques Trump’s Understanding of NFL Kickoff Rules

Nov 21 2025

Kansas City Chiefs special teams coordinator Dave Toub expressed his disapproval of President Donald Trump's recent criticisms regarding the NFL's new kickoff rules. "He doesn’t even know what he’s looking at," Toub stated during a press conference on November 20, emphasizing that Trump lacks understanding of the changes implemented in the league.

Trump, who has been vocal about his disdain for the new rules, which took effect at the start of the 2025 season, has made it clear that he believes they undermine the game. "I hate the new kickoff in football," he declared on ESPN’s The Pat McAfee Show on November 11. "I think it’s so terrible, I think it’s so demeaning, and I think it hurts the game. It hurts the pageantry," he added, mentioning his conversation with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell.

The revised kickoff rules stipulate that the ball is kicked from the 35-yard line, with all players on the kicking team, except for the kicker, positioned with at least one foot on the returning team’s 40-yard line. They must remain stationary until the ball either hits the ground or is touched by a returner inside the 20-yard line.

"I don’t think it’s any safer," Trump continued, critiquing the new setup. "You still have guys crashing into each other. It’s the opposite of what the game stands for. The ball is in the air, and nobody’s moving." His frustration with the rules was also evident during an October interview on Newsmax, where he described the kickoff as "ridiculous" and criticized players for standing still while the ball is in play.

In a September post on Truth Social, Trump reiterated his concerns, stating, "The NFL has to get rid of that ridiculous looking new Kickoff Rule. How can they make such a big and sweeping change so easily and quickly? It’s at least as dangerous as the ‘normal’ kickoff, and looks like hell." He further lamented that this change represents a departure from traditional football values.

Trump's remarks have sparked discussions among fans and analysts alike, with many weighing in on whether his views reflect a broader sentiment within the football community. Toub's comments serve as a reminder that not everyone agrees with the president's assessment of the situation.

As debates continue over player safety and game integrity, Toub hopes that his perspective reaches those in power. "So I’m going to take that for what it’s worth. I hope he hears it," he concluded, leaving room for further dialogue on this contentious issue.
