Trump Comments on Swift and Kelce's Engagement

Aug 26 2025

During a cabinet meeting on August 26, President Donald Trump addressed the recent engagement of pop icon Taylor Swift and NFL star Travis Kelce, which has captivated social media.

“Well, I wish them a lot of luck,” Trump stated when a reporter inquired about the couple's plans to marry after two years of dating. He added, “I think he’s a great player. I think he’s a great guy. And I think that she’s a terrific person, so I wish them a lot of luck.”

The couple made their engagement public through a joint Instagram post, showcasing Kelce’s romantic garden proposal and Swift’s stunning diamond ring, designed by Kindred Lubeck at Artifex Fine Jewelry. The post featured the caption, “Your English teacher and your gym teacher are getting married,” accompanied by Swift’s song “So High School,” which reflects their relationship.

Despite his well-wishes, Trump has not always been complimentary towards Swift. Earlier this month, he criticized her on his social media platform, Truth Social, drawing comparisons to actress Sydney Sweeney amid controversy surrounding an advertisement. He remarked, “Sydney Sweeney, a registered Republican, has the ‘HOTTEST’ ad out there... Go get ‘em Sydney!” before dismissing Swift as “no longer hot” since he claimed to dislike her.

Trump's disdain for Swift intensified after she endorsed his political rival, former Vice President Kamala Harris. He expressed his feelings bluntly on Truth Social, declaring, “I HATE TAYLOR SWIFT!”

In May, he reiterated his sentiments, suggesting that since he publicly stated his dislike for her, she had lost her appeal. Yet, in a surprising shift, Trump opted to extend congratulations to the engaged couple, perhaps influenced by his current approval ratings.

As CNN’s Brianna Keilar noted, Trump appears to be taking a more diplomatic approach this time around.
