Dolphins Trade Jalen Ramsey and Jonnu Smith to Steelers
The Miami Dolphins have traded All-Pro cornerback Jalen Ramsey and Pro Bowl tight end Jonnu Smith to the Pittsburgh Steelers, receiving All-Pro safety Minkah Fitzpatrick and a 2027 fifth-round draft pick in return. The deal also includes a 2027 seventh-round pick heading to Pittsburgh.
Ramsey took to his X account on Monday to announce the trade, confirming that both he and the Dolphins had mutually agreed to part ways earlier this year. The specifics of the split remain unclear, though Dolphins general manager Chris Grier noted in April that Ramsey did not request a trade or a pay raise. After extensive discussions with Ramsey's representation, both parties concluded that a change was necessary.
A source familiar with the transaction, who spoke on condition of anonymity due to the lack of an official announcement, confirmed that Fitzpatrick is returning to the franchise that drafted him 11th overall in 2018. His previous tenure in Miami ended when he expressed dissatisfaction with his role, leading to a trade to the Steelers in 2019.
This trade marks a rare occurrence in NFL history, as it involves two three-time All-Pros swapping teams. According to Sportradar, this is only the third instance since 2002 where such high-caliber players have been traded for one another, following trades involving DeAndre Hopkins and Jimmy Graham.
Smith enjoyed a standout season in Miami after signing a two-year deal before the 2024 season. Despite his impressive performance, which he hoped would secure him a new contract with the Dolphins, he was absent from offseason activities while negotiating. Now, he reunites with offensive coordinator Arthur Smith in Pittsburgh, having previously worked together in Tennessee and Atlanta.
His new contract includes a one-year extension worth up to $12 million for 2026, as confirmed by agent Drew Rosenhaus. This move is part of the Steelers' broader strategy to revamp their roster after several disappointing playoff exits in recent years.
Since March, Pittsburgh has made significant acquisitions, including two-time Pro Bowl wide receiver DK Metcalf and four-time NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers, alongside Ramsey and Smith. Trading Fitzpatrick may also provide financial flexibility for the Steelers to retain star linebacker TJ Watt, who is seeking a new contract as he enters the final year of his deal.
For the Dolphins, losing Smith poses a considerable challenge for their offense, which relied heavily on his contributions in the passing game. Last season, Smith recorded 88 receptions and 884 receiving yards—the highest totals for a tight end in franchise history. With starter Jevon Holland departing for the New York Giants in March, Miami has addressed its safety needs but will likely seek a veteran cornerback to bolster their young secondary.
