Eagles Secure Rookie Safety Andrew Mukuba Ahead of Training Camp

Jul 21 2025

The Philadelphia Eagles finalized a four-year rookie contract with safety Andrew Mukuba on Monday, just a day before the Super Bowl LIX champions report to training camp. Mukuba, selected 64th overall in the 2025 draft from the University of Texas, was the final member of the Eagles' 2025 draft class to sign.

At 22 years old, Mukuba arrives at camp with a chance to secure a starting safety position in defensive coordinator Vic Fangio's system. His collegiate career began at Clemson, where he spent three seasons before transferring to Texas. In 2024, he achieved a career-high 69 tackles, defended 11 passes, and led his team with five interceptions.

While primarily drafted as a safety, Mukuba's versatility shines through his experience in the slot and his impressive ball-hawking abilities. This adaptability could prove crucial as the Eagles look to fill the void left by C.J. Gardner-Johnson's trade to the Houston Texans.

The Eagles, boasting the No. 1-ranked defense from 2024, now have an opening at safety opposite Reed Blankenship. Despite not adding any additional safety depth through free agency, the team still has options available.

Mukuba will compete against 2023 third-round pick Sydney Brown and Tristin McCollum for the starting role. Additionally, Cooper DeJean, another versatile defensive back, may also see action at safety during base defensive formations this season.

As rookies and veterans prepare to report for training camp on Tuesday, the first practice is set for Wednesday, marking the beginning of a new chapter for Mukuba and the Eagles.
