US Navy Unleashes Drone-Destroying Laser Weapon: Helios in Action

Feb 04 2025

The US Navy has unveiled a remarkable display of military prowess with the firing of its drone-destroying laser weapon, known as Helios. A striking photo released in the US Center for Countermeasures' recent annual report showcases the powerful moment when the high-energy laser was deployed from the USS Preble destroyer out at sea.

The demonstration aimed to validate the functionality and performance of the Helios weapon system, equipped with an Integrated Optical Dazzler and Surveillance system, against an unmanned aerial vehicle target. While specific details of the test, such as the location and exact date of the laser weapon's deployment, were not disclosed in the report, the impact of the technology is undeniable.

Developed by Lockheed Martin, the Helios weapon features a 60 kW high-energy laser capable of engaging targets at the speed of light. This advanced directed energy system is designed to obliterate various threats, including drones, fast-attack craft, and missiles, by either melting or overheating them with precision.

Aside from its destructive capabilities, the Helios laser can also function as an optical dazzler, disrupting intelligence and reconnaissance sensors to impede enemy operations effectively.

Notably, the United Kingdom has also made strides in laser weapon technology, testing its own high-powered system named DragonFire against aerial targets last year. Images from the UK's test exhibited the laser's ability to take down a target in a spectacular display of firepower.

These developments in laser weaponry underscore a shift towards more advanced and precise military technologies in modern warfare. The utilization of high-energy lasers represents a significant leap in defense capabilities, offering rapid and effective responses to emerging threats in an ever-evolving security landscape.
