Mavericks Snap Losing Streak with Thrilling 123-117 Win Over Pistons

Mar 22 2025

In an electrifying matchup on Friday night, the Dallas Mavericks put an end to their four-game losing streak, defeating the Detroit Pistons 123-117. Spencer Dinwiddie led the charge with a season-high 31 points, while P.J. Washington Jr. contributed 27 points, including a season-best five 3-pointers.

Dinwiddie's performance was particularly impressive, as he netted 11 of his points from the free-throw line. The Mavericks capitalized on their opportunities, sinking 27 of 36 free throws compared to the Pistons' 14 of 19, showcasing their ability to convert when it mattered most.

Other notable contributions came from Klay Thompson, who scored 20 points, and Naji Marshall, who added 19 points along with 11 rebounds. This victory marked only the Mavericks' second win in their last 11 games, as they strive to secure a play-in spot after their appearance in last year's NBA Finals.

Cade Cunningham was the standout for the Pistons, scoring a game-high 35 points on 15-for-30 shooting. The Pistons currently sit sixth in the Eastern Conference, just one game behind the Milwaukee Bucks.

In a touching moment, the Mavericks honored starting guard Tim Hardaway Jr., who previously played over five seasons in Dallas before being traded to Detroit last summer. However, Hardaway's night was cut short due to a right ankle sprain, leaving him scoreless in eight minutes of play.

The Mavericks utilized all nine eligible players, setting a franchise record with their 39th different starting lineup this season. Kessler Edwards, who has one game left on his two-way contract, was held out. Meanwhile, Anthony Davis (left adductor strain), Dereck Lively II (right ankle stress fracture), and Daniel Gafford (right knee sprain) practiced with the G League's Texas Legends, but coach Jason Kidd did not provide a timeline for their return.

With just 23.8 seconds remaining, the Mavericks led 118-115 when they broke through a full-court press. Brandon Williams, another two-way player, drove to the basket, scoring and drawing a foul for a crucial three-point play.

Despite being second in the NBA with an average of 19.4 fast-break points, the Pistons were limited to just six in this game. Looking ahead, the Pistons will host the New Orleans Pelicans on Sunday, while the Mavericks are set to visit the Brooklyn Nets on Monday.
