Jerry Jones Discusses Cowboys Training Camp Energy, Coaching Changes, and New Player Impact
During a recent interview at the Cowboys training camp in Oxnard, California, owner Jerry Jones expressed his excitement about the current atmosphere surrounding the team. The energy, he noted, is palpable.
“I happen to agree with you,” Jones responded to a remark about the camp's vibrant energy. “First of all, I know it's never been more beautiful out here.” His praise extended to the facilities and the overall environment, which he believes enhances the players' experience.
Jones highlighted the impact of new head coach Brian Schottenheimer, stating, “You add Brian Schottenheimer's new juice coming in, enthusiasm, those young coaches bouncing around here. It's contagious for the players.” This infectious energy seems to inspire even the most seasoned veterans.
Earlier this year, Jones made headlines by appointing Schottenheimer as head coach. With nearly three decades of NFL coaching experience, Schottenheimer transitioned from offensive coordinator to head coach, a move that surprised many. “All of a sudden, you realize you've got somebody sitting there with almost 30 years of experience coaching in the NFL,” Jones explained. “And I remember telling him, 'Brian, you're not Brian Schottenheimer anymore. You're now the coach of the Dallas Cowboys.'”
In a significant offseason move, the Cowboys acquired wide receiver George Pickens. Known for his talent on the field—174 catches and 12 touchdowns in three seasons—he also carries a reputation for locker room issues from his time with the Pittsburgh Steelers. “There's no question that he could contribute to our success,” Jones remarked. “But I like his attitude... that's just exactly where you get opportunity.”
The ongoing contract negotiations with star pass rusher Micah Parsons have become a focal point of training camp discussions. Bill Jones pointed out that CeeDee Lamb acknowledged his previous absence from camp affected his chemistry with quarterback Dak Prescott. When asked about Parsons' readiness for the upcoming season opener on September 4, Jerry Jones sidestepped specifics on negotiations but emphasized the importance of participation: “I'm glad that CeeDee said that... if you've got a contract, come to camp.”
Beyond football, Jones recently gained attention for his role in the Paramount+ series "Landman." In a scene where he offers life advice to a character played by Jon Hamm, he reflects on family and support during tough times. “It reminds me again, it's the subject matter,” he noted regarding the scene's reception. “If you talk about kids... you may string some strums of some hearts that otherwise wouldn't be listening.”
Jones' insights into both football and personal matters reveal a multifaceted approach to leadership and connection, whether on the field or in front of the camera.
