Justin Fields Suffers Dislocated Toe at Jets Training Camp

Jul 24 2025

During a routine drill at the New York Jets training camp Thursday morning, quarterback Justin Fields dislocated his toe. The incident occurred as he fell to the ground, prompting him to limp off the field.

Head coach Aaron Glenn later clarified that Fields was inadvertently stepped on by a teammate during the play, leading to his carting off for further evaluation. The team indicated that Fields would be assessed on a day-to-day basis, with no immediate concerns about a lengthy absence.

Interestingly, the injury unfolded during a period when cameras were not recording, leaving fans and analysts without visual documentation of the event. However, footage captured just moments before the mishap showcased Fields' impressive mobility, a hallmark of his playing style.

In a post-practice briefing, Glenn urged calm among fans and media alike. "When anybody goes down, there's a lump in my throat," he remarked. "Listen, I hate injuries for any player, but the thing is I want to make sure that I understand exactly what the injury is before I move forward on my thought process."

Fields, who signed a two-year, $40 million contract as a free agent in March after a stint with the Pittsburgh Steelers, is anticipated to lead the Jets this season following Aaron Rodgers' departure. Veteran Tyrod Taylor, who turns 36 next month, stepped in for Fields during team drills.

"The most important part is, if anything does happen to Justin, I don't think there's any drop-off as far as what we want to do when it comes to play calls," Glenn stated. He praised Taylor's skill set and leadership qualities, noting how players respond positively to him. "He's been around this league a long time. He knows what it takes to win, and he's a really good person. So, we're all excited to have that guy here."

Glenn emphasized confidence in Taylor's ability to maintain the team's offensive strategy should Fields be sidelined. "Listen, Justin is who he is and if something happens to him, we've got Tyrod and we're ready to go."

As the Jets commenced their second day of camp, initial optimism has been tempered by this injury setback. The early days of training camp, typically filled with hope and excitement, now carry an air of uncertainty.

Reflecting on past experiences, Glenn recalled challenges faced last season in Detroit when key players were injured. "You keep playing football. And that's just what it is. It's more about the play style than the playbook, and our players understand we are going to play a certain way no matter who is in there," he asserted.

Fields, who celebrated his 26th birthday on March 5, was drafted 11th overall by the Chicago Bears in 2021 after an impressive college career at Ohio State. Over three seasons with the Bears, he recorded a 10-28 starting record before joining the Steelers last season, where he achieved a 4-2 record as a starter before being replaced by veteran Russell Wilson.

Recognized as a dual-threat quarterback, Fields poses a significant offensive threat with both his passing and rushing abilities. In 2022, during his second season with the Bears, he threw for 2,242 yards and 11 touchdowns while also rushing for 1,143 yards and eight touchdowns.
