Dolphins’ Bayron Matos Hospitalized Following Training Camp Injury
Miami Dolphins offensive lineman Bayron Matos was airlifted to a hospital after suffering an injury during training camp on July 23. The incident occurred at the team’s facility in Miami Gardens, Florida.
The 24-year-old athlete sustained an undisclosed injury that prompted immediate medical attention. He was transported to Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital, where he remained overnight for evaluation and testing.
On July 24, the Dolphins provided an update on Matos’ condition, stating, “He has movement in all extremities and is in stable condition. He will remain in the care of doctors for continued observation.”
Perlesta Hollingsworth, Matos’ agent, informed local media that the injury is classified as “above the shoulder,” though it remains unclear whether it affects his neck or spine. “He ran into a defensive lineman when his head was lowered and took the brunt of the impact,” Hollingsworth explained.
Family support is crucial during this time; Matos’ girlfriend and relatives are by his side at the hospital, with his mother planning to travel from the Dominican Republic to be with him.
Matos’ journey to professional football is notable. He moved from the Dominican Republic to the United States at age 16, initially pursuing a basketball career. He played for the University of New Mexico Lobos from 2019 to 2021 before transferring to the University of South Florida for the 2021-2022 season.

In 2022, Matos joined the South Florida football team, participating in two games. His selection for the NFL’s International Player Pathway Program in January 2024 marked a significant milestone, aimed at providing opportunities for foreign players.
Signed as an undrafted free agent by the Dolphins in April 2024, Matos was assigned to the practice squad and later signed a reserve/future contract in January. He has yet to make his NFL debut.
Earlier this year, Matos shared his story in a documentary titled *Bayron Matos: El Gigante de Los Mina*. “I was born and raised in the Dominican Republic,” he stated. “I come from Los Mina, which is a tough place. But I always loved watching sports.”
“I never played football growing up. I want people to talk about who I am and what I’ve accomplished,” he added, reflecting on his unique path to the league.
