Kayla Thornton Makes History as First All-Star for Golden State Valkyries
Forward Kayla Thornton has etched her name in history as the first player from the Golden State Valkyries to be selected for the WNBA All-Star game.
On Sunday, the league revealed that Thornton was chosen as a reserve for the 2025 All-Star roster, a decision made by coaches. She will join a prestigious group of players, including Kelsey Plum from the Los Angeles Sparks, Angel Reese of the Chicago Sky, Alyssa Thomas from the Phoenix Mercury, and Skylar Diggins of the Seattle Storm.
This marks Thornton's inaugural All-Star selection, adding to an impressive season thus far.
Having recently celebrated a Championship victory with the New York Liberty, she joined the Valkyries' inaugural roster and currently leads her team with an average of 14.9 points and 7.1 rebounds per game. In June, she earned the title of Western Conference Player of the Week, showcasing her skills with averages of 20 points, 11.5 rebounds, and an assist during that period.
Thornton's performance has been remarkable; she recently achieved a career-high of 29 points in a single game, recorded five double-doubles this season, and has surpassed 20 points in three additional games. Notably, she ranks 10th in steals across the league. The WNBA also highlighted that her All-Star selection makes her the second-most veteran player ever chosen.
Now in her 10th season, Thornton has previously played for both the Dallas Wings and the Liberty.
On Tuesday, All-Star captains Caitlin Clark and Napheesa Collier will select their teams from the remaining starters and reserves.
The Valkyries are set to face off against the Atlanta Dream on Monday, with the game broadcast on local TV station KPIX 5.
