Patrick Mahomes faced the media on Wednesday, November 19, following head coach Andy Reid's pointed remarks about his performance in the Kansas City Chiefs' recent defeat to the Denver Broncos. “I’m just not making the throws,” Mahomes stated, acknowledging the missed opportunities that plagued the game.
Statistics from Pro Football Focus reveal a concerning trend: Mahomes has completed only 17 of 48 attempts on passes exceeding 20 yards this season. “Being better there and giving guys chances, it usually works out,” he elaborated, emphasizing the importance of connecting on deep throws to open up the offense.
Reid, during a virtual press conference on Monday, November 17, subtly critiqued Mahomes’ decision-making. “We’re calling quite a few of the [run-pass options],” he noted, indicating that the team had opportunities to throw but often opted for passing plays instead. The Chiefs managed just 14 rushing attempts in their 22-19 loss, while Mahomes threw the ball 45 times.

In his post-game analysis, Mahomes reflected on a missed opportunity with wide receiver Xavier Worthy early in the game. “I’ve just got to make the throw,” he admitted, recognizing that he failed to capitalize on a designed play that could have shifted momentum.
“I think we’re really talented and we’ve got a lot of great players, but it’s about being more consistent,” Mahomes continued. He acknowledged that while there are moments of fluidity in their offense, inconsistencies have hindered their performance.
Currently, the Chiefs find themselves three games behind the AFC West-leading Broncos and outside the playoff picture—a stark contrast to their previous seasons under Mahomes, where playoff appearances were a given since he became the starting quarterback in 2018.
Despite the challenges, Reid remains optimistic. “We’re not quite as negative as the outside world is here,” he remarked, stressing that the team understands what needs improvement. “Some of these guys have been through some pretty good seasons. And this isn’t like this one’s lost.”
As they prepare to face the AFC South-leading Indianapolis Colts (8-2) on Sunday, November 23, Reid emphasized the need for urgency in addressing their shortcomings.
