NBA Commissioner Addresses Gambling Scandal Amidst Ongoing Investigation

Oct 25 2025

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver spoke publicly for the first time regarding the gambling scandal that has recently engulfed the league. During the pregame broadcast on October 24, he expressed his concerns, stating, “There’s nothing more important to the league and its fans than the integrity of the competition.”

Silver, visibly troubled, shared his feelings with reporter Cassidy Hubbarth before the New York Knicks faced off against the Boston Celtics. “I had a pit in my stomach. It was very upsetting,” he added, reflecting on the gravity of the situation.

The scandal escalated when federal authorities arrested nearly thirty individuals, including Miami Heat player Terry Rozier and Portland Trail Blazers coach Chauncey Billups, on October 23. The charges stem from alleged gambling-related activities, with Rozier accused of conspiring to influence bets based on his performance during games.

Billups faces serious allegations of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and money laundering linked to what officials describe as Mafia-backed poker games. This development follows an earlier investigation into Rozier's performance in March 2023, where unusual betting patterns raised red flags. In that game, Rozier played only nine and a half minutes while over $200,000 was wagered on his performance.

At that time, the NBA found no violations of its rules, allowing Rozier to continue playing. However, with the recent arrests, both he and Billups have been placed on immediate leave. When questioned about the league's previous decision regarding Rozier, Silver noted that there was “insufficient evidence despite the aberrational behavior.”

“We then looked into that situation and were very transparent about it,” Silver explained. “While there was that aberrational betting, we frankly couldn’t find anything.” He emphasized ongoing cooperation with law enforcement since that incident.

Both Rozier and Billups have denied any wrongdoing through their legal representatives. Meanwhile, former NBA star Charles Barkley weighed in on the controversy during an ESPN pregame show, asserting that the scandal is unrelated to gambling addiction. “Under no circumstances can you fix basketball games,” Barkley stated emphatically. “Rozier makes $26 million; how much is he going to benefit from taking himself out of games?”

This scandal emerges just days into the NBA season, prompting Silver to apologize to fans for the turmoil. “I should’ve started with how excited we are to be on Amazon,” he remarked. “I wouldn’t have predicted that my first interview ever on Amazon would be about sports betting.”

As reported, the NBA maintains partnerships with at least 14 sportsbooks, including major players like FanDuel and DraftKings, with some teams establishing their own agreements as well.
