Ole Miss Coach Lane Kiffin's Departure Sparks Controversy Amid LSU Hire

Dec 01 2025

Lane Kiffin's departure from Ole Miss has ignited a firestorm of reactions among fans, many of whom feel he left without a second thought. Reports indicate that as he vacated the premises, his belongings were unceremoniously left on the street.

A viral image shared by a local sports reporter shows a clothes rack filled with dress shirts, abandoned at a street corner. The caption read, “Ole Miss even put Kiffin’s clothes in the street,” highlighting the sentiment surrounding his exit.

Over the weekend, Kiffin accepted the head coaching position at LSU, leaving the Rebels in a precarious position as they eye a potential College Football Playoff run. This move is particularly controversial given that it is uncommon for coaches to leave their teams mid-season, especially when they are still in contention for a national title.

In a statement, Kiffin expressed his disappointment about not being able to lead Ole Miss through the playoffs. “I was hoping to complete a historic six-season run with this year’s team,” he stated, reflecting on the team's success and his commitment to finishing strong. He acknowledged that Friday’s Egg Bowl against Mississippi State would be his last game with the Rebels.

Despite his new role at LSU, Kiffin had hoped to continue coaching Ole Miss through the postseason. However, university athletic director Keith Carter denied this request, emphasizing the need for the program to prepare for its future.

As Kiffin departed Mississippi on Sunday, footage surfaced showing fans booing and hurling insults at him while he boarded a plane. He described the day as “very challenging and difficult,” acknowledging the complexities of his situation.

“We went through a lot last night with Keith Carter trying to figure out a way to make this playoff run work,” Kiffin explained. “At the end of the day, that’s his decision. I totally respect that and understand that decision.”

He concluded with well wishes for his former team, expressing hope that they would excel in their upcoming games and pursue a national championship.

In light of Kiffin's departure, former defensive coordinator Pete Golding has been appointed as the interim head coach, tasked with guiding Mississippi through the playoffs and beyond.
