Travel Delays Expected for Steelers Fans Leaving Training Camp

Jul 23 2025

The Pittsburgh Steelers kick off their training camp today, with the first open practice scheduled for tomorrow. However, fans heading home from Saint Vincent College should prepare for potential travel delays due to ongoing PennDOT projects.

Two significant projects are underway that will primarily affect the return journey after a day at Camp Tomlin. While seasoned Steelers supporters are familiar with the scenic drive along Rt. 30 in Westmoreland County, this year’s return trip may not be as smooth.

Traveling east toward Ligonier will present challenges as single lane closures are in effect. "If you're leaving training camp and heading east, expect delays due to lane restrictions," stated Bill Beaumariage, Assistant Executive of PennDOT District 12.

The construction zone is located on the bridge over Loyalhanna Creek, where traffic is reduced to one lane in each direction for necessary bridge reconstruction.

For those departing camp around 5 p.m. and heading west toward Greensburg and the Pennsylvania Turnpike, additional delays are anticipated. Tree trimming crews will be closing a lane of Rt. 30 between PA-66 and the Turnpike from 5 p.m. to 7 a.m. "If you’re leaving late or stopping for dinner, be prepared for possible delays in that area," Beaumariage added.

On a positive note, fans utilizing Rt. 22 and Rt. 981 through Latrobe will find a construction-free route this year, as the work that caused delays last season has been completed.

For those attending training camp on Thursday, parking opens at 11:45 a.m., with gates opening at noon and practice commencing just before 2:00 p.m.

As fans gear up for an exciting season, they should remain aware of these travel conditions to ensure a smooth experience while supporting their team.
