Pittsburgh's Enduring Appeal as a Film and TV Hub

Jul 01 2025

Pittsburgh stands out as a vibrant center for film production, ranking among the busiest cities in the nation, according to the Pittsburgh Film Office.

Recent projects like "The Pitt," "Hershey," and "How to Rob a Bank" showcase the city's versatility as a filming location.

With over 5,000 individuals depending on the film and television sector, location scouting plays a crucial role. James Mahathey, a seasoned scout, has explored countless sites across western Pennsylvania and beyond.

He recalls the explosive scenes from "The Dark Knight Rises" at Heinz Field, effortlessly identifying where various films were shot throughout the city.

Armed with a camera, Mahathey roams Downtown Pittsburgh, capturing images of potential filming sites at every turn.

"Producers or production designers send us a punch-list of key locations they want to consider for Pittsburgh," he explained, emphasizing his role in promoting the city as a prime filming destination.

"There are so many options here; you have urban settings that can mimic New York, and areas in Oakland that resemble D.C.," he added, highlighting the region's diverse landscapes.

What constitutes an ideal filming location? Mahathey notes, "It's about finding clusters of locations close together. You can shoot an alley scene, then quickly transition to an office setting within a building." This flexibility is one of Pittsburgh's greatest assets.

Recently, crews transformed Carson Street for "Hershey," while Ninth Street in Ambridge was closed for filming on Monday. Mahathey describes the decision-making process as nuanced and intricate.

"A million little things come into play, all depending on what the designer and director envision," he said.

Each year, Mahathey logs thousands of miles in search of the perfect spots. However, the real challenge begins once he secures approval from the director. He coordinates police permits, security arrangements, catering services, and ensures everything is ready when filming commences.

The film industry injects approximately $150 million annually into Pittsburgh's economy, underscoring its significance to the region.
