Three Rivers Arts Festival Thrives in New Strip District Location

Jun 05 2025

The Three Rivers Arts Festival kicked off Thursday, attracting eager crowds at its new temporary location in the Strip District. This year, the festival has moved from its traditional site to the area previously occupied by the Boardwalk, a floating entertainment complex along the Allegheny River.

Organizers assure attendees that while the venue has changed, the essence of the festival remains intact. "We're so thankful to the Buncher Company for helping make this happen just this one year here in the Strip District," stated Brooke Horejsi, chief programming and engagement officer for the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust. The festival is set to transition to its permanent home, Arts Landing, in the Cultural District next year.

The Buncher Company has facilitated the use of two lots in the Strip District, accommodating over 200 artists showcasing their work, alongside food and beverage vendors. The Dollar Bank stage will host performances from notable acts, including Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Lisa Loeb and Sons of Mischief throughout the four-day event.

"This is the best festival that I've done," remarked Nathan Doverspike, an artist from Polish Hill. He is presenting prints inspired by Japanese manga and anime for his fifth consecutive year at the festival. "I've traveled to New York City and Kansas City, but for some reason, the Pittsburgh crowd just loves art. The general Pittsburgh vibes here are amazing."

Bill Booth, an artist from Lower Burrell, showcases his "Electric Booth," featuring creations made from piping, electrical circuitry, and lightbulbs. This marks Booth's third year at the festival. "It's been really cool," he said. "The first time was just all new and amazing to see the festival, and it's been a really good experience since."

Both artists were part of the festival's emerging artist showcase during their inaugural year, which provides a free tent space to selected newcomers. Doverspike expressed gratitude for this opportunity: "I don't know if I would've ever even thought of doing this without the emerging artist program. The overhead costs can be daunting, and not knowing if it will work out is a big risk."

They both emphasized that witnessing patrons' reactions makes their participation worthwhile. "That's the best thing about it; anyone who comes by gets a big smile on their face because they're looking at different figures, and something resonates with them," Booth added.

Festival officials have noted that foot and vehicle traffic will vary throughout the weekend. Multiple parking options are available in nearby Strip District garages or within walking distance downtown. Additionally, foot traffic can access the festival via a trail from Allegheny Riverfront Park, providing an alternative entrance to the main intersection at 15th Street and Waterfront Place.

As the festival unfolds, it continues to celebrate local artistry and community spirit, promising an engaging experience for all attendees.
