Steelers Set to Kick Off Training Camp at Saint Vincent College
Training camp is upon us, and for Steelers fans, it’s akin to a mid-summer holiday. On Wednesday, the Pittsburgh Steelers will arrive at Saint Vincent College, with their first open practice scheduled for Thursday.
Tuesday marked a serene prelude in Latrobe, where the historic campus awaited the arrival of the six-time Super Bowl champions and their devoted supporters. The atmosphere buzzed with anticipation as the team prepared to take the field.
Father Paul Taylor, President of Saint Vincent College, reflected on the longstanding relationship between the institution and the Steelers, which began in 1966. "We are thrilled to welcome the team and its fans back to camp," he stated, emphasizing the significance of this annual event.
"Every Lombardi Trophy that the Steelers have won has begun here at this training camp," Father Paul noted. He expressed optimism about this season, citing the efforts of Coach Tomlin, Omar Khan, and Mr. Rooney in shaping a competitive roster. "I am certainly looking forward to this being the seedbed for a Lombardi for this coming year," he added.
While the team's season trajectory remains uncertain, one change is clear: training camp practices will now take place in the afternoons, typically starting just before 2 p.m. This shift aims to accommodate both players and fans more effectively.
With significant off-season acquisitions, a record turnout of fans is anticipated. Attendance remains free, but guests must secure tickets online in advance.
Just across from the college, Spring Hill Suites has been preparing for an influx of visitors since last year’s camp concluded. Jocelyn Conard, the hotel’s director of sales and marketing, confirmed that they are nearing full capacity. "We are pretty close. Yes. I will say we still have availability the last week of camp," she mentioned, highlighting the busy nature of the first two weeks.
Local establishments like Sharky's Café are gearing up for the fan frenzy as well. General Manager Johnathan Heiple noted that staffing increases by about 30% during this period. "All of our ordering from any liquid alcohol beverages, anything like that, food all goes up about 30 to 40%," he explained, anticipating a bustling atmosphere.
Fans are particularly eager to see star edge rusher T.J. Watt in action following his recent three-year, $123 million contract extension. This deal not only solidifies his position with the team but also makes him the highest-paid non-quarterback in NFL history for the second time, with $108 million guaranteed.
The excitement surrounding training camp is palpable as players and fans alike prepare for what promises to be an exhilarating season ahead.
