Toru Ohtani Coaches Youth Baseball Team in Los Angeles
Toru Ohtani, father of Dodgers sensation Shohei Ohtani, is actively coaching his youth baseball team in Los Angeles as part of the Torrance Friendship Games. The Oshu City Youth Baseball Team arrived from Japan on Tuesday, just in time for this weeklong event celebrating international camaraderie.
On Friday, the Oshu middle school team faced off against local Torrance players in exhibition matches held at North High School. Toru Ohtani, who has a history of coaching Shohei from his early days through junior high, emphasizes a balanced approach to youth sports. "These years, 10-, 11-, and 12-year-olds are really important years for growing up… don't push it," he conveyed through an interpreter.
The games will continue throughout the weekend, with a welcome ceremony scheduled for Saturday at 10 a.m. at Kendall Field in Torrance. Later that day and on Sunday, Toru will conduct clinics aimed at young athletes participating in the 310 Baseball program.
The 310 Baseball program played a crucial role in organizing the event and managing logistics for the visiting team. Additionally, the Torrance Unified School District facilitated host families for the young athletes, fostering a welcoming environment.
"Hosting the Torrance Friendship Games is about more than just baseball; it creates meaningful opportunities to promote international friendships, tourism, and lays the groundwork for future economic development and global partnerships," remarked Torrance Mayor George K. Chen.
Attendance for the Torrance Friendship Games is free, inviting community members to engage with this unique cultural exchange.
